EGL/EGA (warning: some blunt use of language)

It was torture to choose my favourite photo from this editorial -

Magazine: Vogue Germany
Issue: October 2008
Title: Insel der sehnsuch
Photographer: Karl Lagerfeld

But here it is. I adore the Elegant Gothic Lolita/ Elegant Gothic Aristocrat theme of this spread. Also, the location is just brilliant, I like the beach, the cliffs, the encroaching forest. It reminds me of "The Piano." I chose this photo because the hair is fantastic. I like wearing my hair this way - ITS ELEGANT OKAY I AM NOT BRUSHING IT ON PURPOSE!!! I LIKED ROOM WITH A VIEW, DO YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT?!

As usual, I will use this German fashion editorial to talk about Japanese Subculture Fashion.
While searching around for some examples of Elegant Gothic Lolita and Elegant Gothic Aristocrat, I found a comprehensive article which succinctly explains the usage of the word -

LOLITA

Although, in North America and Europe, one thinks automatically of Vladimir Nabokov when one sees the word Lolita, this subculture has never been about sex. Quite the opposite is true; this is girl culture for girl consumption. The Lolita wardrobe includes such demure items as high–collared, long–sleeved shirts and dresses, and skirt lengths that fall below the knee. It is quite likely that the use of Lolita, in this context of subculture, has origins in the Japanese practice of incorporating English words into their phrases and names, which creates an entirely new meaning. This may in turn have origins in the desire to enhance the prestige value of an item by linking it to the West.1
The article, which is by Kyshah Hell for Morbid Outlook, goes on to quote my all time favourite blog (aside from your two blogs, obvs):

Subcultural participant Carmen Yuen states, “For me, I consider what’s provocative isn’t showing [a lot of] skin, but wearing a fashion that makes people take a step back.

this is a scan from the "Gothic and Lolita Bible" which predates the above editorial... source

Which is absolutely one of the reasons why I am drawn to it. My penchant for the outrageous attracts me to styles which people will think ridiculous or offensive. I am not afraid of being laughed at! (Can I throw in my favourite quote ever? "The function of art is to disturb" - George Braque) another interesting perspective the article offers is its analysation of the conservative nature of an authentic lolita wardrobe:

The Lolita subculture allows a form of socialization that is all female; it helps girls cement friendships within the common interest of creativity, and without the antagonism that male attention can create. This subcultural style is, according to Carmen Yuen, a way to feel very beautiful without having to sexualize yourself...[but] playing dress-up and looking cute is self-satisfying in its own right.
There is an interesting feminist angle here. And I would agree with this point, if it didn't directly conflict with my personal documentation/love of the sexualisation of childhood themes. This raises a lot of questions for me. ( Mary Wollstonecraft's The Rights of Women adresses the enslavement of women by the imposition upon them of a man's ideal wife, which can succinctly be described as a "highly sexualised child."

It is not a stretch for me to proclaim the validity of the general statements that the following features have been for most of history and are still found attractive in women: youthfulness, virginity, innocence, obediance, ect. And squinting I think of the undeniable sexyness of big hipped/big breated women...which contradicts my previous statement...I did say this is about questions, I am circling the idea that "lolita fashion = (beauty-sexuality)" and yet "lolita fashion = (sexuality-shame)" when maybe it is just "lolita fashion = (sexuality, but only if you're a big pervert like Kiki and want to be spanked and call your lover Daddy.)

Where is the attaction in sexuality disguised as childishness/innocence. Is it just in the inherent desirability of taboos? Is it the influence of the christian ideal of virginity and cultural association of shame and sexuality? Is it the same element that makes rape fantasy so appealing - that women can relinquish the responsibily for and shame of the pleasure they feel...their sexuality? Perhaps it is so difficult for me to wrap my head around this because I'm such a... I believe "bottom" is the polite term (as opposed to BDSM nympho freak sub pervert = NSFW!!!).

Women should be able to bond with one another and emrace their sexuality at the same time. Women should be able to be openly and confidently sexual AND beautiful and respectable.
Women should be albe to play dress up and not need a reason.

and yet

would I enjoy dressing up in a giant frilly pink dress and bonnet and being called a good little girl while sucking cock like it was a lollipop as much if these statements were true?

Looking forward to your thoughts,
- Kieran

The Sixties

Dear Wam Fans,

Hi! It's me, the sixties! I know you haven't really missed me, because I've been around, here and there, mostly in the form of mod orange furniture in consignment stores and photo slide shows of Twiggy. I just wanted to send a quick note to, well, brag about how well I've been doing lately. While my tacky cousin, the eighties has been popping up all over Hipster Runoff and doing coke and dancing to electronica with all you stylish bloggers - I have been hanging out with Angelina Jolie and breathing the spirit of the Kennedy Camelot into high fashion magazine editorials. Check me out!

Much love, your friend,

One of the things I have learned about fashion at this level is the versatility of some models. To me Natalia always looks like Natalia...In this month's Vouge, the one with Reese Witherspoon, they have a spread of her with some children in the most beautiful bohemian style floral dresses, but she definitively has a signature expression (wide eyed and pouty lipped = jealousy). Then of course, Vero and I watch Top Model and often every photo the judges choose of a person has the girl making the same face.

In these two photos the lighting and wardrobe is different, but the makeup is exactly the same. The difference between the intensity and angst in the first photo, (which, to me, tells the story of a desert war where the second photo could be an/her orphaned child) and the second photo's innocence is the model's facial expression and the tension/whimsy conveyed with her hands and body. I like that they kept the freckles on her stomach in the second photo, her stomach even looks like she has some baby fat rounding it out... Cute! Also, I want those bloomers.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti
Number 8
Pictures of The Gone World
It was a face which darkness could kill
in an instant
a face as easily hurt
by laughter or light

'We think differently at night'
she told me once
lying back languidly

And she would quote Cocteau

'I feel there is an angel in me' she'd say
'whom I am constantly shocking'

Then she would smile and look away
light a cigarette for me
sigh and rise

and stretch
her sweet anatomy

let fall a stocking

post-halloween to do list

Alright, seriously, HOW DID I MISS THIS!?!?
I must be better prepared next year.

I think I will go shopping to the ....sexy-type stores... in town, just after halloween and try to scoop up some sale costumes. I'm sure all of those left over knee high socks from incomplete sexy school girl costumes will be really cheap. Also, I can try to pick up the following:

1. (on the internet) A discounted replica battle royale collar
2. A discounted snow white costume (for obvious reasons), preferably an official disney "prestige" or "deluxe" costume...a cheap slutty one will do though.
3. Discounted slutty shoes, including gogo boots, mary janes, ect.
4. Dicounted frilly/bow covered socks and underwear and lingerie.
5. Discounted star wars costumes of any description.
6. CANDY

more music, pharcyde

One of mine and Vero's favourite songs...I don't know how I feel about the remix, but thanks for bringing it to my attention Michelle dahling. That McCain campaign blog playlist thing with TPC on it was a little jarring...doesn't the mummy (mccain) still listen to phonographs?

Pussy Cat Dolls - I Hate This Part

Even though this video looks like it's done by the creative director from the Urban Outfitters Catalouge, I felt like something was missing...

UNTIL the last minute or so of the video.

1. How can that be the same girl as this:

2. How can SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE (the stylist/models/editors ect) be so enthralled with sixties asethetic and "lolita" sexuality as I am?

I love how dark the Terry Tsiolis shots are - to contrast the adorable pictures of the models as children... click for more.

This one is a mystery too - I don't know who it is, I suspect it is for Italian Vouge and I know it is Balmain.

All the site said was that this photo was by Hedi Slimane...not of who or for what. Vero? Do you know? I mean, I'm sure you do, because you know everything.

Tea Party

Okay, so I think it is about time that I toss around my idea for a big photoshoot with you two and Kim when she comes over here. I'm thinking the theme should be a tea party. This is for many (selfish) reasons:

1. I have an incredible purple party dress that is semi-lolita-ish and I want pictures of me wearing it because I haven't been brave enough to take it public.

2. This theme has a great capacity for irony or darkness - while I may lean towards a more literal, childish interpretation because of my love of everything lolita, the three of you could certinally take it in a different direction.
3. I have so many cool toys and precious things that would make great visual easter eggs in the photo, tons of hello kitty stuff, stuffed animals, frilly stuff...my sister has the most beautiful collectors china Ainsley tea cups, and then you could throw terrible stuff in there like handcuffs, knives, dildos, ect.

So, I think if everyone brings two (minimum) outfits, we can do this FOR REALS and do hair, makeup, lighting, (all you need is several desk lamps with high wat bulbs in them), staging and have the most incredible pictures of the four of us, and then portraits of us individually.

Why put all of this effort into some photos? First, because Vero and I love to take pictures, second, because the Metropolitan is doing another photo issue (deadline Nov. 15th) which the two of us were going to submit to anyways. Three, because it's halloween. Four, because it's a super fun thing for us to do all together!

The only thing I haven't nailed down is a location. My room is WAY WAY too small and the red walls reflect the light in a funny way...

Vero and Ish - what are your thoughts?
Inspiration:

X Men Origins: Wolverine

I've always said that they will keep making X-Men movies if they can maintain a copyright and I keep paying to watch them. I am posting about this because I have become more excited about this film for two reasons: 1. Ryan Renolds is going to be in it (I heart him so much I have a life-size poster of him in my basement and him marrying scarjo: I don't know who I'm more jealous of.) 2. MOTHER FUCKING GAMBIT is going to be in it.

If you were with me in the theater for X2 - you will remember me FREAKING OUT over the name "Remy" on a computer screen in the scene where Mystique is hacking somethingorother... And then in the tragedy of a "film" that was X-Men: The Last Stand (which I LOVED even though it was terrible and botched many, many, many suberb themes/scenes/characters/story lines from the comics) Gambit had a cameo but was cut out of the final film.

Gambit is the sexiest character in the whole of the x-men comics and now he is FINALLY going to be on the big screen. MAY 2009, ladies! Mark your calenders now.

face hunter

Oh, and one more thing from the face hunter (I realise y'all have probably seen these shots months ago, but I could help but say...

VA-VA-VOOOOM!

head scarves

Alright, so, today I overslept. I had to go to work without brushing my hair, so I chose to hide this catastrophe with a black pashmina tied around my head, but exposing my hair, and very loose - like a jedi-going-to-the-dark-side hood. People have been giving me funny looks all day, but not saying anything. Is this because they are trying to figure out if I am wearing a scarf for religious reasons? or as a political statement? or a protest against thanksgiving? or I am in mourning? or a goth?
Why can't it just be accepted by the public as a fashion statement? I know, I took first year philosophy, everything is political, every move you make has deep sociological connotations. But why can't a scarf, just be a scarf? SCARF FOR SCARF'S SAKE.

Okay, I'm done my little rant. Here is my argument's evidence, provided by the face hunter:

Underpants!

According to stylehive - cutesy panties are coming into fashion. They linked to these; Kiki wants! Oh, and also the heart print, thigh high, satin bow socks. *in colbert voice* PANTIES, PLEASE! ( I know I already have similar ones in pink...but they are going to fall apart any day now.)

Michelle!

I pressed refresh on the UVic website for like 20 minutes AND YOUR FACE NEVER CAME UP. Seriously, I would still be refreshing if Veronica hadn't suprised me at work and informed me of your web of lies.

lol...When it does go up, you better believe I'm photoshopping your head onto a comparison chart to demonstrate the fact that you are a million times better looking than the other people who live in the banner on uvic.ca .

AND not only are you painfully attractive, you picked Cillian Murphy! HOW COULD I HAVE BEEN SO FOOLISH?! The one man whose cheekbones are arguably pointier than my candidate for World's Most Handsome Man. You could grate cheese on those cheekbones!

Getting Personal

A response to Veronica's Q&A...

1. Who are you? Kieran O’Brien

2. Who/what inspires you? My friends constantly do, like Kim who doesn’t take crap from anyone or anything or Veronica who has the most exquisite taste and level head or Ish who has read, like, everything or my sister who is such a good student. The memory of my great grandmother…wow, that got heavy fast. The rest will be lighter, I promise.

3. What are your obsessions? (rightly so, Vero, if I had an iphone I’d be obsessed with it too.) Japanese Lolita Fashion, sex, Harvest Moon, the facebook app. ‘Pet Society’ – which is really just a manifestation of my obsession with cute stuff! Super kawaii! – sex, ANTM and sex.

4. What is your dream occupation? I got what you were hinting at Vero, you naughty naughty girl!

Everyone knows my dream occupation is to be a Disney Princess. More (or less?) realistically I’d like to be a translator of literature/poetry (but I don’t know more that one language! Lol) or an artist/writer (but I don’t do either, super lol). And in crazy-go-nuts fantasy land, I’d like to be the editor of a trendy magazine (Sassy? Nylon? Vouge? An all-powerful hybrid of the three…) or a famous photographer like Annie Leibovitz, but also a model, only sometimes, humbly and shyly emerging from behind the camera...

5. If you could buy anything, what would it be? Weird. For some reason my material libido just died. Just now! I would say either a dvd copy (which does not exist) of the independent movie I was in when I was 14 (for like 2 minutes, but that is way longer than the ½ second I was in Double Jeopardy for), a movie I never saw because it was inappropriate for children, a movie called The Hot Karl. OR this giant hello kitty fountain that was installed in New York this summer.

6. What attracts you? I agree with Veronica on the wit. I would say a shared passion steeped in both knowledge and intelligence.

7. Who is your ideal man? I am into pretty boys. To adapt the sagacious words of Mr. Ludacris, I want a “gentleman in the street but a freak in the bed.”

8. Who is the most handsome person on planet earth? Because Vero already picked Daniel Craig, I pick this guy - He might be the prettiest though, not the hansomest. Damn.

9. What do you think about fashion? Veronica told me “fashion is the ultimate fantasy.” So that’s how I think of it, not of something I could ever actually afford to do, but something I love to dream about. I think that’s what top designers are doing anyways, the clothes are just their dreams and it doesn’t really matter if anyone wears them or not. Art for art’s sake.

10. What is your biggest dream? one day, i hope to have a polar bear. BAM.

Alice in Wonderland

This is one of the internet's only photos of Mia, who will play Alice. This is her in June of 2008 at the Australian Breakthrough Awards.

Ailce in Wonderland by Tim Burton with Johnny Depp. Why was I not notified?! Am I the last to know? What a tragic oversite. I hope Burton realises his rude error and in the future, will be sure to call me before he does anything this staggeringly cool.

Although, after Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland does seem like the logical next step. Especially because they can't remake the Wizard of Oz. Well, I guess Burton can do anything but that might have him assasinated by the knights protectorate of the film history canon. They exist, trust me. Ever hear from that guy who made a colourful eighties keytar version of Fritz Lang's Metropolis? I didn't think so.

My prediction? After this they remake Shirley Temple's "The Bluebird." Any other predictions?

Vero knows I went gaga over the first few photos by Annie Leibovitz for Disney's year of a million dreams...This blog links to all of the photos (of every celeb from Giselle to Abigail Breslin). This one is a masterpiece though.

Quick! Everyone post their favourite Leibovitz photo.

Blogs

Ladies,

both of your blogs have been top notch these last two days. That means a lot to me because I'm bored out of my skull here at work, and you, with your lists and superior taste in fashion/lions riding horses has delighted me beyond measure. I must admit, I am feeling absolutely GIDDY this morning and I can't say why...perhaps I am drunk on the joy of seeing you two last night!

Oh, on the off chance I have more than two readers, I am refering to Ish (pony malta) and Vero (streamline moderne) I would hyperlink that, but I'm lazy and the blogs are already in the top right hand corner of this page. Seriously, click it yourself.

Prepare yourself for a flurry of updates today!

WTF VBCKS

Seriously. W.T.F.

First of all, it's important that I point out that the designer was clearly cosplaying some World of Warcraft and got carried away... study the feet here for similarities:

Secondly, if I'm going to wear dangerous shoes, they are going to be these $95.00 Lolita Rocking Horse shoes:

Lolita Fashion Beginner's Guide

Sweet Lolita says: educate yourself!

Well, this is the best resource of all of them, so if you feel you must educate yourself on this obsession of mine, please read on!

But wait, there's more:
Lolita fashion has a strict side, to be considered authentic (read: not a poser), you can follow this chart:

But to contradict myself, there is this easy guide explaining how to begin encorporating Lolita Style into your wardrobe!
OR, to learn more you could watch this movie, Kamikaze Girls, check out the trailer or stop what you are doing and watch it online right now.

Lolita in the News

Hopefully, the two of you don't actually follow Vancouver's own La Carmina , so that whenever I piggyback her stories, it's news to you.

These articles in the big-time media are short and sweet, and don't say anything about Lolita fashion that you wouldn't already know from being within three feet of me, because I'm constantly talking about it. If it's true that you want to learn more, I have way better resources and I would be happy to post a beginner's guide...

The Reuters article was particularily redundant to me, but the photos were amazing! This girl is so, so beautiful and her expression is so wistful...

In New York, Sweet Lolitas are especially popular. “It is the most childlike of the looks,” Ms. Rutland said. “A lot of the prints are fruits and sweets or cute animals.” Frilly skirts with petticoats, baby-doll dresses, bloomers, corsets and high-necked, ruffled shirts are all part of the style, and no look is complete without a parasol, a headdress, a handbag or the perfect pair of Mary Janes. Fine lace and demure cuts emphasize the overarching preference for modesty.
The only problem with the NY Times photos was that the girls expressions were all so wrong, and other genres, like gothic aristocrat, boy-style, gothic-punk lolita, were not properly identified in the slideshow...shame. I think Pink Emmie does the red outfit on the left better.
